Burst-pipe related claims

Black Bird Construction has been appointed to numerous claims involving burst pipes. dealing with a burst pipe comes with its challenges such as identifying, pinpointing, and locating exactly where the affected pipe is positioned. This is generally the most complicated aspect of the claim, however, once the burst pipe has been identified, our plumbing team creates an access point and is then able to replace the affected section of pipe to re-establish the affected pipeline. In severe cases, the affected pipeline has to be ‘bypassed’ in order to create a new line. The reason for this is to avoid using the existing supply line. Due to various issues with various types of aged pipe, whether it be copper, polycop, or galvanized pipe bursts are a common occurrence. This is simply because pipes, regardless of what they are made of, have a lifespan. During the many instances, our technicians have been appointed to claims, they have discovered that the pipelines are not always at a good standard and are susceptible to further bursts after working on them. This is often due to the pressure of the water running/circulating through the pipeline system once the main supply has been re-established. This is because the pressure from the mains, rushing through the affected pipe causes the weakened section of the pipe to rupture, subsequently leading to a burst to occur/develop.

Burst pipes are a common occurrence, and understanding how to react when a burst pipe is identified is a fundamental part of preventing water loss and ensuring that the correct professionals are called in to resolve the issues. Below is a list of 10 steps to help fix a burst pipe.

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply: Locate the main shut-off valve and turn it off immediately to stop the flow of water. This valve is typically located near the water meter or where the main line enters the building.
  2. Drain Faucets/Tap/Mixers: Open all faucets, taps or mixers in the affected area to drain any remaining water from the pipes. This will help reduce pressure on the damaged pipeline.
  3. Turn Off Electricity: If the burst pipe is near electrical outlets or appliances, turn off the electricity in that area to prevent the risk of electrocution.
  4. Assess the Damage: Inspect the burst pipe and surrounding area to assess the extent of the damage. Identify the location and size of the rupture in the pipe.
  5. Collect Water: Place buckets or towels under the burst pipe to collect any water that continues to leak. This will help minimize water damage to floors, walls, and belongings.
  6. Temporary Patch: If the burst is small and accessible, you can use a pipe repair clamp, epoxy putty, or a rubber patch to temporarily seal the leak until a permanent repair can be made.
  7. Cut Out Damaged Section: If the burst is significant or the pipe is severely damaged, you may need to call out a professional or plumber to cut out the damaged section using a pipe cutter or hacksaw. Make sure to measure accurately before cutting.
  8. Replace with New Pipe: Purchase a replacement section of pipe that matches the material, diameter, and length of the damaged pipe. Use pipe fittings and appropriate connectors to securely attach the new pipe in place.
  9. Soldering (for copper pipes): If you’re dealing with copper pipes, you’ll need to solder the new section in place. Clean the ends of the existing pipe and the new section, apply flux, and use a torch to solder them together.
  10. Test the Repair: Once the repair is complete, turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks. Inspect the area thoroughly to ensure that the repair is holding and there are no additional leaks.
